1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger RT

1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger RT

Only a Plymouth Hemi Cuda might be more valuable than this 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger RT. Nothing but these Hemi powered Mopar muscle cars are increasing in value in the collector car market these days. The demand for them among well-heeled muscle car collectors is reminiscent of the way prices were ramping up before the recent recession. As the values on these cars increase there are still some opportunities to pick up Hemi cars with the idea that they will increase in value. Today, however, Mopar buyers are much more particular than they had been before the 2009 recession. Today’s buyer is demanding that the Hemi car have bullit-proof paperwork which will prove that it is numbers matching and must come with a known history or ownership.

Legendary Motorcar Company has just listed this 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger RT for sale.  It is  1 of 137 built with the expensive 426 Hemi coupled with 4-speed transmission. The Hemi option, costing a whooping extra $1,228, explains why very few sold.  The R/T’s $3266 base price was excessive to begin with for a Pony car.

The heart of this beast, built on June 8th 1970, is a numbers matching mighty R-Code 426-4bbl Hemi. The factory rated it as a conservative  425 horsepower so no wonder this big block was possibly the most desired engine of the day and is still stirring up the high demand by collectors of today. Chrome callouts for the 426 Hemi are shown on each side of the hood scoop along with the red medallion.  Power is delivered through the numbers matching Hurst Pistol-Grip 4-speed manual transmission, factory Track Pak Dana 60 Sure Grip rear end with 3.54 gears and exits through optional Dual Exhaust Chrome Tips. In the quarter-mile this Hemi car was said to do 13.2 @ 108 mph. If you happen to lay the hammer down on this Hemi orange ride you might think you have been launched into the atmosphere.

The 1970 model was an eye-grabber with a deeply recessed grill set back behind the dual headlamps. The rear lights were contained in a full width unit, the center section which has large single reversing lamps with the name Dodge on it. The R/T came standard with the Sport Hood with a power bulge hood fitted with dual air intakes which were not connected directly to the air filter. This hood design really gave the impression of a large engine underneath. Rallye instrument, standard on the R/T, had a cluster containing four large equal sized pods with a 150 mph speedometer, 8,000 rpm tachometer, clock and one pod containing four gauges for oil pressure, alternator, engine temperature and fuel.

Dodge advertisements of the day announced the all-new high-performance pony car stating ‘This Pony has Horses…and…The Pony has a mean streak’.

Challenger, Dodge’s answer to the Mustang created “Pony Car” segment. Introduced for the 1970 model year, it was one of two Chrysler E-body cars, the other being the slightly smaller Plymouth Barracuda/Cuda. Competition was fierce in the muscle car war and both these cars were available in a staggering number of trim and option levels as well as virtually every engine in Chrysler’s inventory.

Chrysler intended the new 1970 Dodge to be the most potent pony car ever and positioned it to compete against the Mercury Cougar, Pontiac Firebird and other more luxury-type muscle cars. Dodge differed enough from the Plymouth in its outer sheet metal just like the Cougar differed from the shorter-wheelbase Ford Mustang. The Challenger was available as a two-door in either a hardtop coupe or a convertible body design. There were two models for its introductory year – base model Challenger and Challenger R/T. The Special Edition or Challenger SE that added a number of appearance, convenience, and comfort items was available as a model in either the Challenger or Challenger R/T.

Open this Coupe’s big solid doors and sit down on firm pleated high-backed Black Bucket Seats inside a no frills cockpit where the legendary Mopar power will provide the driver a no-nonsense driving sensation. Factory Rallye Instrument Cluster dash Tach and Clock. Loaded with options including: PS, PDB, AM/8-Track Radio with a 3-front/2-back speaker system, L/H Remote Body-Colored Racing Mirror, stylized center Console with wood grain accent has Pistol-Grip conveniently angled towards the driver for slap-fast shifting.

Comes complete with the Broadcast sheet, which comes with the car, suggests the first owner wanted to have a muscle car with a touch of class and the big bad Hemi power. This Challenger is stunningly dressed in the famous Hemi Orange known as Code EV2 with the Black Vinyl Roof option Code VX1. Hemi Orange was part of Chrysler’s hip ’brighter is better’ mindset back in the day and the Vinyl Top is as straight and true as the day it left the factory. So as not to disturb this classy look the first owner stayed with the flush-fitting body color gas cap and the stripe-delete request code. To complement the look these Hemi cars came with the plain body-colored steel rims with ‘dog dish’ Dodge caps wearing F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs.

If you’re looking for the ultimate piece of Detroit metal that’ll show as well as it tears up the road, this Dodge Hemi is for you!
