By 1958, Ford had an entry into the passenger friendly pickup truck market with their styleside pickup introduced in 1957. Chevrolet countered in ’58 with their new Fleetside model, including an all-steel cargo box larger than the original Cameo. The ’58 Cameo also sported the new Chevrolet look with a new front grille and the sensational quad headlights. This was also the first year of the new Chevrolet “Task Force” series of light duty trucks. The Task Force series had the premium Apache cab with the restyled hood and trim.
There were just 1,405 Cameos produced in 1958 and it would be its last year of production, with the least number of Cameo Carriers produced in its four-year run. It was also the last year for the Cameo 4” X 8” fiberglass bed. It is the only year in which the Cameo and the Apache emblems appeared on the same pickup model. In 1959 the Cameo Carrier was replaced by the El Camino.
Chevrolet targeted the Cameo Carrier at an American buyer seeking more passenger comforts in their pickup truck ride. Yet no one today would convict a stock original Cameo Carrier of having too many creature comforts. So this one has an upgraded V8 engine connected to an automatic transmission, sitting on a Camaro suspension for smooth ride and quick handling. Ideal Classic Cars in Venice, Florida has this beautiful 1958 Chevrolet 31 Cameo Carrier Pickup for sale. They say it drives nice and comes ” equipped with power brakes, air conditioning, a Jensen stereo, and a Realistic Brand CB Radio.” They claim, “The white and red interior is very clean, comfortable, and luxurious, just as the high-end Cameo Carrier should be. The exterior of this beautiful pickup is equally as nice, finished in two-tone Cardinal Red and Bombay Ivory accented by very nice chromework all around and a gorgeous wood bed.” (Follow this link for dozens of high resolution photos.)
The Chevrolet Cameo Carrier was a high profile factory produced truck that was the first one to come to market with passenger car type creature comforts. They were produced from 1955 through 1958. All 1955 Cameos were painted two tone red and white. The interior was also two-tone and came with arm rests, dual sunvisors, a cigarette lighter and chrome door knobs on the inside panels. The signature feature on the Cameo was a large wrap-around rear window.
This is a sweet ride that will get respect from any classic collector. You can see why so many collectors feel that the 1958 Apache model is the most desirable Cameo to collect.
